My existence has been easy, if not glamourous or pleasurable. I show up when the time is right, do my job and return to do it all over again. Over the years, I've learned quite a bit about human nature; they fascinate me.
No, I'm not human. I am immortal. I have been called many things in many different languages. I am the Angel of Death, the Grim Reaper, a Dark Spirit. Whatever I'm called, the result is the same. I am one of a handful of souls that come for you when you die. I don't kill you. I don't make the decision of when you are going to succumb, nor will bargaining gain you extra time. I only fulfill the demands of others.
I can't say I enjoy my job; the crying, the begging, they get old. But there are times that it is quite enlightening. The acceptance in an old man's eyes when his pain has finally stopped, or the sparkle in the eyes of a child as they enter the veil and see things human eyes can't accept. And then there's the time I spend watching.
One of the perks of being me is that I get to be around for the last hours, sometimes days, of a person's life. I get to see the most intimate details that many never will. And the stubborness of the human spirit sometimes causes my breath to catch. You are such fascinating creatures. You feel so deeply, and act so impulsively. Its quite a beatiful thing.
